Every year on July 29, National Chicken Wing Day is celebrated across the United States.

According to the official website of Nationalchickenwingday.com, chicken wings, which have also been regularly called Buffalo wings, began their rise in Buffalo, New York. This part of the U.S. is where a woman named Teressa Bellissimo created them in 1964 during her time at Anchor Bar.

To achieve what has become known as the modern-day chicken wing, she deep-fried chicken wings and tossed them in butter and hot sauce. Normally, chicken wings were only being used for soups. Upon serving her new recipe, her new dish quickly became popular.

Meanwhile, another restaurant, John Young’s Wings’n Things, had already been serving a similar yet original recipe of breaded wings with a tomato-based sauce since 1963.

The Anchor Bar’s version gained a bit more traction by inspiring other local restaurants, which resulted in Buffalo celebrating Chicken Wing Day on July 29 along the way. This celebration is to recognize Buffalo City’s surprising intake of thousands of pounds of wings each week.

For National Chicken Wing Day 2024, numerous restaurants are offering special promotions and deals.

For starters, Buffalo Wild Wings is offering six free wings for patrons who dine in and spend at least $10 today, according to USA Today.
