Synchron Implants ChatGPT in Human Brain
July 28, 2024
ChatGPT has teamed up with Synchron, and the two have begun successfully implanting ChatGPT inside human brains.
Synchron is a company that has been working on developing brain-computer interfaces (BCI) for people primarily with physical motor impairments. It seems only natural that the company has integrated OpenAI’s generative AI with its BCI platform. This new chat function feature allows users with paralysis to use and engage with digital devices by communicating hands-free through their mind’s thoughts without any type of physical manipulation.
ChatpGPT’s AI then generates automated, contextually relevant text prompts, allowing for a form of communication for those who possess neurological disorders and otherwise would not be able to use their smart devices. It detects and transmits motor intent from the brain to control devices.
Synchron’s BCI is implanted through an endovascular procedure that enters through the jugular vein and creates a minimally invasive procedure as a result. This advancement aims to enhance communication and restore autonomy for individuals with upper limb impairments.
Moreover, in May, OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, demonstrated the spring update for ChatGPT, which featured the advanced GPT-4o model. This update enabled ChatGPT to seamlessly integrate and reason across audio, vision, and text. The improved chatbot showcased more human-like qualities, including a range of emotional tones and the ability to mimic human speech patterns, such as laughter and humor.
During the demo, ChatGPT used a voice similar to Scarlett Johansson’s from the film “Her” but also included a robotic voice option. Initially, users had access to only a few preset voices. The AI responded to human cues with humor, and its conversational flow allowed for real-time interaction without waiting for full responses.
ChatGPT also demonstrated enhanced capabilities in areas like graph analysis, coding, and math tutoring by analyzing images and videos. Despite some minor issues, such as premature responses or misinterpreted prompts, the overall demonstration highlighted the chatbot’s improved functionality and friendly demeanor. After the event, CEO Sam Altman noted that the updates reminded many viewers of a particular movie, reinforcing the “magical” feel of the new features.
