Stop & Shop Releases List of Closing Locations

July 12, 2024

Stop & Shop announced it will close 32 underperforming stores by the end of the year to focus on growth through price investments and store remodels. The closures will affect stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities. As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”

In Connecticut, a total of five locations have been verified as closed or closing by Nov. 2. Massachusetts has a total of eight locations being closed so far. A total of 10 locations are being closed in New Jersey, while a total of seven locations are being shut down in New York. And finally, two locations are being closed permanently in Rhode Island.

Employees at these locations will be offered other positions within the company. Despite the closures, Stop & Shop will maintain a strong presence with over 350 stores. The company aims to strengthen its brand and enhance customer experience through these strategic decisions.

The Stop & Stop chain of retail supermarkets is owned by Ahold Delhaize, which revealed that the stores would be closed in early November. The parent company also gave warnings last May that there would be a reduction in the number of stores being operated without any particular locations being named at the time.

CBS News also points out how Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said that “since 2018, Stop & Shop has remodeled 190 stores, which then performed better than stores that hadn’t been remodeled. He announced that the remaining stores will be remodeled.”
