Krispy Kreme Gives Out Free Doughnuts After CrowdStrike Update

July 21, 2024

In response to the lingering problems from the CrowdStrike software update, Krispy Kreme made this official announcement on its Instagram:

“Sweet-ware Update Available! 💻 Does technology have you down today? Our windows are working great and so is our Hot Light! Come on in and help yourself to a FREE Original Glazed® Doughnut from 5-7pm to add some sweetness to this sour day! 🍩 🙌 Free Original Glazed® doughnut offer valid 5:00pm to 7:00pm 7/19/2024 only at participating U.S. Krispy Kreme shops and is subject to product availability. In shop or drive thru. Limit one per guest. No purchase necessary.”

This announcement seems to be Krispy Kreme’s way of bringing good vibes after a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike triggered a global tech outage on Friday, affecting airports, Social Security offices, and jail operations. The issue arose from an interaction between CrowdStrike’s update and Microsoft Windows, impacting multiple Fortune 500 companies.

Experts, including Munish Walther-Puri, highlighted the risks of dependency on a few cybersecurity providers. The incident underscored the fragility of global economies reliant on interconnected computer systems.

Anne Neuberger from the White House stressed the need for better digital resilience and policies to mitigate such disruptions. Despite CrowdStrike deploying a fix, affected systems continue to face challenges, requiring complex solutions for recovery.
