Disney Workers Prepare To Strike
July 21, 2024
On July 19, 2024, Disneyland Park cast members voted overwhelmingly, with 99% in favor, to authorize a potential strike organized by the Disney Workers Rising bargaining committee. This vote was a response to alleged unfair labor practices by Disney, including intimidation and disciplinary actions against union members.
The authorization vote does not immediately trigger a strike but empowers the committee to call for one if negotiations fail to yield a fair contract.
“Cast members are scared of being retaliated against by Disney for their union activity and that’s preventing us from getting a contract that pays us living wages. This rally today, on Disneyland’s birthday, shows Disney that even though we’re scared, we’re going to stand up and do what it takes. We make the magic happen. We are why Disneyland can celebrate its birthday today. And we need a fair contract that respects us and our work.”

The cast members emphasized that a strike would be a last resort, and they are committed to returning to the bargaining table on July 22 and 23, 2024, with hopes of reaching a satisfactory agreement. They highlighted their unity and determination, supported by community and union solidarity, in their pursuit of fair wages, improved working conditions, and respect from Disney.
The situation remains fluid, contingent on further negotiations and the response from Disney. Cast members are advised to stay informed through union updates and to avoid any premature actions such as walking out without official notification from their union.
In response, Disney issued a statement on its website: “We greatly appreciate the important roles our cast members play in creating memorable experiences for our guests, and we remain committed to reaching an agreement that focuses on what matters most to them while positioning Disneyland Resort for growth and job creation. Master Services Council’s strike date authorization is not unusual as part of a negotiations process, and we look forward to continuing discussions at upcoming meetings on Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23. A strike has not been scheduled, and Disneyland Resort continues to welcome guests.”
