Elon Musk: Tesla Will Use Humanoid Robots Starting Next Year

July 23, 2024

Tesla chief Elon Musk announced in a social media post on Monday that the electric car company will have “genuinely useful humanoid robots in low production for Tesla internal use next year.”

Musk, on his social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, added that the company will hopefully also begin “high production” of the robot, called Optimus, to sell to other companies in 2026.

According to the BBC, Musk previously said he expected the robot “to be ready for use in Tesla factories by the end of this year.” Meanwhile, companies like Boston Dynamics and Honda are also working on their own humanoid robots.

This news comes as Tesla is due to release its latest financial results later today.

The company has stated that its goal is to create an “autonomous humanoid robot” to perform “unsafe, repetitive or boring tasks.” If Optimus sounds familiar, that’s because it alludes to Optimus Prime, the heroic leader of the Autobots in the Transformers media franchise.

Musk previously said that Tesla aimed for the robots to be mass-produced and cost under $20,000 each.

Several reports noted that Musk, the world’s richest man who also owns SpaceX, often publicly sets ambitious goals that aren’t always met.

Musk said in 2021 that he expected the robot to be ready for use in Tesla factories the following year, according to The Guardian. The billionaire has been giving updates about the robot’s design progress on X.

The BBC added that in 2019, Musk said he felt “very confident” that Tesla would have self-driving taxis on the road by 2020, which was then punted to August of this year, and now seems to have been delayed to October, according to Bloomberg

Electrek reported that Tesla claimed last month that it has two Optimus robots working autonomously in its factories.
