Various Food Recalls in Effect
July 27, 2024
There have been multiple food recalls these past two weeks. The CDC has released information about how Boar’s Head recalled liverwurst products and various deli meats due to potential Listeria contamination.
The affected liverwurst was produced between June 11, 2024, and July 17, 2024, and includes both 5-pound loaves and sliced packages with sell-by dates from July 25, 2024, to Aug. 30, 2024. The recall also affects other deli meats, such as Virginia Ham, Italian Cappy Style Ham, Bologna, and Beef Salami, with sell-by dates of Aug. 10 or Aug. 15, 2024. Look for the “EST. 12612” mark on product labels.
The recalls stem from the discovery of Listeria in an unopened package of Boar’s Head liverwurst. Listeria contamination can spread through deli meats and equipment, and while it can grow in refrigeration, it is effectively killed by reheating the food to 165°F. Further testing is ongoing to determine if the same strain of Listeria is responsible for recent illnesses and to assess if other deli meat products are affected.
Consumers are advised to either immediately dispose of or return the affected meats and thoroughly clean their refrigerators and any surfaces that may have come into contact with these products.
Moreover, Wiers Farm, Inc., based in Willard, Ohio, announced a voluntary recall of whole cucumbers and bagged salad cucumbers due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This recall affects whole cucumbers and bagged salad cucumbers with pack dates of June 5 and June 6, 2024. The products were sourced from out of state and then handled and distributed by Wiers Farm. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development discovered the potential contamination through routine sampling.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues. Although no illnesses or complaints have been reported, consumers experiencing these symptoms should seek medical advice. The affected products, including whole cucumbers (1.5-2.5 inches in diameter, 6-9 inches long) and 2-pound bagged salad cucumbers in clear bags with a blue base, were distributed to select Walmart stores in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.
Consumers are advised to discard any affected products. For questions or concerns, contact Wiers Farm at (419) 933-2161 or via email at customercare@wiersfarm.com. The company is working with regulatory officials to resolve the issue and ensure food safety.
