Walmart Explains Next Phase of Technological Transformation
July 11, 2024
Walmart is advancing its grocery network with a focus on modernization and efficiency. The company is constructing five new high-tech perishable distribution centers in California, Illinois, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Texas, which are expected to add around 2,000 jobs and enhance supply chain capabilities.
Additionally, Walmart plans to expand automation at four existing perishable distribution centers in Minnesota, North Carolina, Indiana, and Tennessee, further increasing fresh product capacity. By the retailer’s approximation, this adds “over 500,000 square feet of automation per site to increase capacity for fresh product.”
The company is also retrofitting facilities like the one in Winter Haven, Florida, to integrate advanced technology, aiming to optimize grocery operations similar to its ambient distribution center in Brooksville, Florida. That way, more of Walmart’s perishable distribution centers will be caught up technology-wise and be on an equal playing field.
This investment in technology aims to vastly increase storage capacity and processing speed, allowing Walmart to meet its growing customer demand more effectively and more consistently.
In its announcement, the company emphasized the positive impact on job roles, altering positions into higher-tech roles that offer improved job satisfaction and potential for career growth. Walmart sees technology as a method for transforming the lives of its associates. This transformation is a result of how “technology is evolving physically demanding jobs into roles where associates are operating and maintaining high-tech systems, leading to an improved quality of life.”
Walmart’s news release goes on to explain an example of how “associates who used to manually stack cases may work in a high-tech facility as an automation equipment operator and continue growing their career as an automation control center operator, automation technician or automation area manager. Plus, associates who have transitioned into these new roles tell us they are more enjoyable and satisfying, while also often resulting in higher base pay.”
