FDA Alert: Lead in Cinnamon Products

March 7, 2024

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health alert, cautioning against the purchase of certain ground cinnamon products available at retailers like Family Dollar and Dollar Tree due to elevated lead levels. This warning follows recalls of lead-contaminated applesauce, which led to numerous poisonings, especially among young children.

In response to concerns over lead toxicity, the FDA conducted a focused survey on ground cinnamon products from discount stores. Analysis revealed heightened levels of lead and chromium in six brands:

  1. La Fiesta: Available at La Superior and SuperMercados
  2. Marcum: Sold at Save A Lot
  3. MTCI: Found at SF Supermarket
  4. Swad: Sold at Patel Brothers
  5. Supreme Tradition: Available at Dollar Tree and Family Dollar
  6. El Chilar: Found at La Joya Morelense

The FDA advises consumers not to purchase these products and to dispose of any already in possession. The FDA has also recommended that the manufacturers recall the cinnamon products, though the agency has so far been unable to contact MTCI’s manufacturer.

So far, according to CBS News, “Colonna Brothers of North Bergen, N.J., is recalling 1.5-ounce Ground Cinnamon and 2.25-ounce Supreme Tradition Ground Cinnamon distributed nationwide and through mail order.” Colonna reported that it has halted production and distribution of all cinnamon.

Additionally, “El Chilar Rodriguez of Apopka, Fla., is recalling 127 cases of El Chilar Ground Cinnamon ‘Canela Molida’ sold in 1.25-ounce bags, distributed by La Raza of Forestville, Md., and sold at retail stores throughout Maryland.”

Lead exposure may not manifest immediate symptoms, but prolonged exposure can pose serious health risks, especially to unborn babies, infants, and young children. Such exposure can lead to neurological issues like learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and diminished IQ.

This alert underscores the importance of vigilance in checking product labels and being aware of potential health hazards in everyday items. Stay informed and prioritize safety in consumer choices to safeguard against such risks.
